Fill In the Blanks, Round 2: Downtown
01/11/2012

This former BP station at Ponce and Piedmont has been empty for about five years now. While the neighborhood apparently didn’t need two gas stations at the same intersection, perhaps it could use a coffee shop/sandwich shop/bakery on that corner. Ideally, it would be a place open for weeknight and weekend brunch and dinner. ?The [...]

Atlanta Streets Alive returns
01/11/2012

The first of Atlanta Streets Alive’s two June events is today from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This year’s ASA will take place along 20 blocks of what will become the first segment of the downtown streetcar’s route.  Guided bike tours will cover the entire route.   No bike? No problem. You can take a free [...]

Coffeshop Campers
01/11/2012

Most of my coffeeshop transactions tend to be made on the run, as I’m usually there on the way to something else I’m already late for. But apparently some people who do have time to sit down with their drinks find themselves unable to because of other patrons who virtually move in. I didn’t realize [...]

RUMOR: What’s Missing in Downtown?
01/11/2012

I often find myself needing cheese for dinner. (Here’s a little insight into my culinary prowess: melt cheese on or into whatever it is you’re cooking, and it will taste better). I work in midtown and live just east of downtown and thus constantly curse the lack of “pick up some cheese on the way [...]

Wanted: Workout novelty injection
01/11/2012

Next month I will have been working out consistently for 15 years. In that time I’ve been to innumerable classes in at least 10 gyms in three states, run and walked about 8,000 miles and amassed more than 130 workout videos plus a small closetful of exercise equipment. All that to say: I’m bored. It’s [...]

Like night and day: How commuters change population numbers
01/11/2012

Ever wonder where all the other people stop-and-going around you during your commute are on their way to? Or how many people are in town during the week versus on the weekends? No? Well, just go with me on this. Suburb-to-suburb commuters outnumber city-to-suburb commuters in the U.S., but in a sprawling metro area like Atlanta’s, [...]

A Ducky Day
01/06/2012

The ducks were having a casual stroll on the grounds of The Carter Center library. The one on the left gave me a look, though.

Peachtree Center Avenue
01/06/2012

Downtown Atlanta, traveling toward Midtown. If you zoom in you can see the IBM Tower, the building in the middle, and right below it is Emory University Hospital Midtown.

Virginia Highland
01/06/2012

Virginia Highland is a popular area in Atlanta for dining, shopping, or just walking around people watching. Excellent restaurants, interesting shops, and the homes are as expensive as they are beautiful.

Grady Memorial Hospital
01/06/2012

Grady Hospital is Atlanta’s “catch all” hospital. Grady serves all people, insured or not. It’s best known as a Level I trauma center, Level I facilities having the equipment and personnel necessary to care for the most seriously injured patients. Grady is the only L1TC within 100 miles of metro Atlanta. You can read about [...]

Sightless Among Miracles at The Carter Center
01/06/2012

The inscription on the sculpture reads: For hundreds of years, a child leading a blind elder has been the fate of families stricken with river blindness,  onchocerciasis, in Africa and Latin America. Now the demise of this ancient scourge is in sight, thanks to a drug donated by Merck and Company and distributed to millions [...]

Gimme Shelter
01/06/2012

I hope he was able to stay dry and safe tonight. A severe thunderstorm came through Atlanta with hail and strong winds, causing power outages. I’ve seen many homeless people take shelter in these spaces.

Stopped! Probably not in the name of Love.

Wich kind of food are they selling?
01/06/2012

Gyros, I know. Philly, I know. But Sandwhiches? Maybe it’s a new kind of fast food. Not.

Rush Hour Zero
01/06/2012

I-75 South, entering downtown Atlanta, at the beginning of rush hour. It just gets worse.

Gu’s Bistro
01/06/2012

A few years ago, there were these thin slices of pork stir-fried with fresh bamboo shoots (operative word: fresh) and strips of Chinese dry tofu. And a plate of ground pork stir-fried with mustard greens. Delicious was an understatement. Those two dishes made a huge fan out of me. The place? Sichuan House in Duluth. [...]

The Best Things I Ever Ate: 2011
01/06/2012

2011 was a ho-hum dining year. Ramen, Korean, Mexican, Japanese, pho, pizza, and burgers were the usual suspects. But most times, it was difficult to figure out where to go for something different and unique. The quest for happy food — food that makes me happy — was never ending. Only a handful of dishes [...]

Merry Christmas!
01/06/2012

I’m sure you celebrate this time of year in many ways. However it is, whatever you call it, and however else you say it, I’m sure we all agree on one thing: it’s a special time to celebrate with family and friends. Me? I was brought up to celebrate it this way: Merry Christmas! See [...]

Staplehouse: Small Batch Soup
01/06/2012

So if you haven’t been to a Staplehouse underground dinner yet then you’re missing out. I like it that theirs is more intimate. And the food is really good. And Ryan is brilliant. And Jen is so sweet. And. Just go already! Small batch soup. The soup changes every week. Get on their email list [...]

Fulton judge calls time-out on airport contract
01/06/2012

The monumental task of overhauling Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport with more than 150 new restaurants, retail shops, and other businesses includes several steps: the heated fight between dozens of vendors to win lucrative spots, the messy battle to convince Atlanta City Council to approve the proposals, and the legal fallout that follows. We're well into the latter.…
